The future is iCloudy
There are several possibly answers to the question of what iCloud, Apple’s soon-to-be-announced “cloud” service, actually is. For sure, we’ll know soon enough, but it’s fun to speculate. The front-runners seem to be: it’s a music streaming service, that will allow you to play any music you own no matter what device you’re currently using it’s an...

Apple & Samsung – There’s Much the same between U... →
Mobile Orchard: Apple & Samsung – There’s Much the same between U and I: “Samsung’s designers either got lazy or accidentally hit copy when they meant to press ‘create derivative’.” This is the nub of it - Samsung copied the design, the look and the feel. I’m all for innovation - and this ain’t it.

QuickPick Kicked out of the App Store
rentzsch: Seth Willits / @sethwillits: QuickPick is being kicked out of the App Store. It doesn’t matter that QuickPick existed years before Launchpad. Rejected. Period. QuickPick is Seth’s application and document launcher. Apple has apparently decided to remove/retroactively-reject QuickPick as being too similar to 10.7’s Launchpad. At least it’s an Mac app, and therefore he...

Zite smacked down →
This sucks - Zite is a great app, and through it I’ve discovered web sites that I never knew existed, visited them, and even subscribed to their RSS feeds. When will publishers wake up and realise the benefit of apps like this ?

Tumblitter
I really should try to use my Tumblr blog more - it’s far more feature rich than Twitter. Are there any good desktop clients for the Mac ? The web interface is very nice, but I’m really a desktop App kind of guy…

Feature checklist dysfunction
This is a really great post by marco: The tech press loves checklist comparisons. Let’s evaluate the iPhone to see whether it’s a good product: Sounds like a terrible product. I bet it will fail.

iPad Paper Template Link →
This is a paper iPad template that I created for UI design. It includes keyboard graphics for landscape and portrait orientations, as well as a grid underlay that’s 10px per square. The physical size might not quite jive with the real thing - the stated specs don’t quite add up. The screen size is based on Apple’s states pixels per inch and resolution, so that at least should...

“Bring up ageism and out comes it comes — it’s the one insult that’s considered...”
– I’m sure I’m already experiencing ageism as a 39 year old programmer - so much so that I’ve removed my DOB from my CV. The thing is, not only am I still staying at the cutting edge (RoR, iPhone, etc), but I feel like I’m only just hitting my stride. In any other profession,...

re: The Curious Pricing of the 27" iMac
jimcloudman: The monitor is, by all accounts, the greatest piece of liquid crystal display heaven to ever grace the Earth. Marco Arment touches on a good point, though: How are they making anything — or even not losing money — with the base-model 27” iMac? Now, you have IPS displays in the hands of everyone who buys the 27” iMac. Although these posts focus on the 27”, the argument...

I think it’s a little something like this… Featuring the voices of Jon Gabrus and Derek Nason. UPDATE: A guy named Ian from Bethesda, Maryland emailed me: “My house is the redbrick at 1:51.” This is pure brilliance

Apple eBook reader
The BBC ran a story on it’s main evening news programmes last night about the launch of the Kindle in the UK (although, you still have to actually order from Amazon.com, not .co.). They interviewed a bookshop owner and got his opinion of the device. It was pretty much what you would expect - he’s sure that electronic books are the future, but the Kindle isn’t it. What was...

HTML & CSS Aqua Progress Bars
Thanks to the power of CSS animations in WebKit, it’s possible to finally produce really good looking progress bars that exactly mimc those in Mac OS X, using only HTML and CSS and three small images. The progress bars produced by the following CSS are fully animated: indeterminate progress bars are animated (the ‘barber pole’ effect) the ‘filled’ portion of the...

App Store Submissions Process - an Analogy
Here’s a fun game for you to play: Think of a number 7 (2 weeks later) Wrong. Think of a number. 23 (2 weeks later) Wrong. Think of a number. erm. Can I have a clue ? Sometimes, this is exactly what it feels like trying to submit an iPhone app to the App Store. You can submit your app, and after a wait of two weeks or more, find that it’s been rejected because of a problem...
